Stanley Kubricks interpretation of The Shining is notoriously hated by Stephen King himself. King notoriously disliked the film due to the numerous changes Kubrick made from the book.

King wrote a screenplay draft for the film. Kubrick completely ignored it, though and called King's screenwriting, "weak". Instead, Kubrick decided to adapt the book himself with novelist Diane Johnson, writer of The Shadow Knows.

In Stephen King's original novel, Jack drives a red Beetle, while Kubrick's film features a yellow one. Film scholars and fans widely interpret the inclusion of the crushed red Beetle as a deliberate visual nod by Kubrick to Stephen King—a symbolic way of saying he was deviating from the source material to tell his own story. 🌙

There is a good reason Kubrick modified and changed the story to his liking... hidden within a maze. 🌀
