### Overview

Brain-computer interfaces are a direct communication link between the brain's electrical activity and an external device, most commonly a computer or robotic limb. BCIs are often directed at researching, mapping, assisting, augmenting, or repairing human cognitive or sensory-motor functions.

DARPA's interest in nonsurgical brain-machine interfaces, medical BCI work, military interest in noninvasive interfaces, and consumer wearables all show that reading or influencing nervous-system signals is no longer science fiction.

DREADDs allow scientists to activate or deactivate neurons without implanting anything in the brain, raising concerns about potential misuse. 

Optogenetics, involves using light-sensitive proteins (opsins) extracted from plants to manipulate neuronal activity. mRNA platforms could enable remote control of neuronal activity via light pulses, potentially disrupting the brain's interception pathways. 

These technologies could be delivered through viral vectors. The potential for optogenetics to be included in mRNA platforms also raises concerns about biosecurity vulnerabilities. 

Concerns arise that these technologies could interfere with free will and be used for remote observation or behavioral manipulation.
